Learning and Acquisition
Before starting the topic, we must know “What is acquisition?”
– ‘Acquisition’ is an unconscious process through which a child picks up a language in
a natural setting. There is no conscious effort in acquisition. It takes place naturally and
spontaneously.
অর্থাৎ শিশুরা নিজে থেকে বা স্বয়ংক্রিয় ভাবে কোনো ভাষা অর্জন করতে সক্ষম হয় তাকেই ‘Acquisition’ বলা হয়।
A child acquires a language from the
subconscious region of his mind acquires a language from the subconscious region of his
mind. Thus he develops the ability in a language for use in network, and communicative situations.
Characteristics of Acquisition:
- In Acquisition, Instruction is not required here.
- language development takes place in a natural setting.
- It helps to initiate a language.
- It involves neither deliberate effort nor formal instruction. It is an unconscious
- process.
Now, we have to know, What is ‘learning language’?
– Learning, on the other hand, is a conscious process through which one comes to know
the language. This is obviously a deliberate attempt that comes from without not from
within. Learning language means ‘knowing the rules, having a conscious knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
Characteristics of Learning language:
- In language learning, instruction is helpful and often necessary.
- In learning, language development takes place in an artificial setting.
- It helps in editing and correcting acquired language.
- The child does not get the opportunity of frequent exposure to the language.
‘Learning’ takes place in three levels-
(1) Cognitive: It involves acquisition of knowledge.
(2) Affective: It involves modification of emotion.
(3) Conative: It involves acquisition of skills and habits.
